MODULE 7 - INTRODUCTION

It is appropriate to consider the cerebellum and the basal ganglia one after the other because both play a role in organizing and refining motor activity. Both receive extensive "planning" information from the cerebral cortex, process it in some way and send their outputs back to the cortex. In our treatment of the cerebellum, we tried to trace out the neural circuitry in detail. But the circuits are even more complex in the case of the basal ganglia, and only a few of them can actually be seen. Therefore, the emphasis in this module is going to be on simply identifying structures and two obvious pathways.
