MODULE 13 - SECTION 3 - THE HIPPOCAMPUS

The Pixies instist that you do three things before you continue with this module.

     1) The Hippocampus is a cortical structure, formed by the medial edge of the of the temporal lobe cortex, which has "curled up" and become buried within the lobe. Because it is hidden from view in the intact gross brain, it is difficult to form a mental image of where it. So start this module by reviewing some figures in the Digital Anatamist. It's easy to navigate around the site but they (the Pixies) have a few suggestions:
          - a rotating view of the brain (the hippocampus is purple)
          - a brain dissection of the Hippocampal Formation
          - another rotating view of the Limbic System
          -
a horizontal section through the gross brain
    2) Next, read Section 4, Chapter 5: Limbic System:Hippocampus in the UT Medical School Online Text.

    3) Finally watch Episode 6 The Aging Brain
of the Charlie Rose/Eric Kandel brain series. In it Brenda Milner describes here experience testing the patient HM; her work provided a historic leap forward in our understanding of hippocampal function. NOTE: As of 10/22/2014 access to Episodes 6 and 7 (on YouTube) is blocked. We continue to list them here, in the hope the blocks will be removed.
