MODULE 2
OBJECTIVES
- - After you have completed this module you should be able to do the following:
- 1) Describe how enlargement of the cerebral hemisphere and the development of the cerebellum have covered the dorsal and lateral surfaces of the brainstem, obscuring them from view.
- 2) Identify the prominent landmarks on the dorsal, ventral and lateral surfaces of the brainstem.
- 3) Identify (or color in) - on dorsal, ventral, mid-sagittal and lateral views - the medulla, pons, midbrain and diencephalon.
- 4) Identify the cranial nerves as they exit from the brainstem.
- 5) Recognize the major landmarks which allow you to determine that a section passes through the medulla, pons, midbrain or diencephalon.
- 6) Be familiar with the major features of a typical spinal cord segment, and how variations in these may be used to predict (roughly) the level of the segment.
- 7) Be familiar with the general relationships between the spinal column, the exiting spinal nerves, the spinal meninges and the spinal cord.
- 8) Be able to compare the spaces created by the spinal meninges (epidural, subdural and subarachnoid spaces) with their intracranial counterparts.
