MODULE 4

THE TRIGEMINAL SYSTEM

- - The following four dorsal views of the brainstem summarize the key features of the trigeminal system:

----- Figure 4-4 identifies structures directly related to the sensory input from the trigeminal nerve
----- Figure 4-5 describes the touch pathway for the trigeminal system
--- --Figure 4-6 describes the proprioceptive pathway
----- Figure 4-7 describes the pain and temperature pathway

- - To look at our slides, with trigeminal structures and pathways drawn in, open Figure 4-8; keep it open for orientation and call up slides either using it or the list below. We suggest you go through the slides in the following order

The trigeminal nerve passes through the middle cerebellar peduncle

Cu Slide 15
Cu Slide 14

Trigeminal fibers approach and enter the chief sensory nucleus. Second order neurons within the nucleus relay touch information rostrally by way of the ventral secondary trigeminal tract

Cu Slide 13
Cu Slide 12

Some trigeminal fibers bypass the chief sensory nucleus and ascend in the mesencephalic tract.

Cu Slide 15

Other trigeminal fibers turn caudally and descend in the spinal tract of the trigeminal nerve, some of them going as far as the cervical cord. These fibers will terminate in the nucleus of the spinal tract

A FINAL COMPARISON

- - In the end, we have three important sensory pathways, or systems, to deal with: the dorsal column-medial lemniscus pathway, the anterolateral pathway, and the trigeminal sensory system. It may be helpful to look at the three of them, side-by-side and the last figure, Figure 4-9 , is an attempt to do so. Finally, draw in every feature you can think of, regarding these pathways on your hard copies of Figure 4-10 and Figure 4-11.
