MODULE 7
THE SLIDE REVIEW
The remainder of this module is simply a guided review of labeled slides. We will start by looking at slides through the whole brain. You have all these views in your ATLAS OF WHOLE BRAIN SECTIONS and should refer to that atlas for help. As you look at each section, make certain you can identify the structures listed in the "objectives" section, above.
---- FRONTAL SECTIONS THROUGH THE WHOLE BRAIN Use Figure 7-2 to call these up.
---- HORIZONTAL SECTIONS THROUGH THE WHOLE BRAIN Use Figure 7-3 to call these up.
---- SAGITTAL SECTIONS THROUGH THE WHOLE BRAIN Use Figure 7-4 to call these up.
FRONTAL SECTIONS THROUGH THE BRAINSTEM As you look through these brainstem sections, your focus should be on identifying: the substantia nigra, the subthalamic nucleus, the ansa lenticularis and the fasciculus lenticularis. The latter two structures are pathways by which the globus pallidus projects around (the ansa) or through (the fasciculus) the internal capsule to reach the thalamus. Blumenfeld shows them in his Figure 16.9. These pathways ultimately fuse to form a third pathway, the fasciculus thalamicus; Blumenfeld also shows it in his figure, but it is difficult to identify on slides. (We will not make use of the fields of Forel terminology which Blumenfeld mentions on his page 705.)
Most of these views are in your ATLAS OF BRAINSTEM SECTIONS, so copies are not included in this module.
