MODULE 9

OBJECTIVES

After you have completed this module you should be able to do the following:

----- 1) Be able to identify the nuclei of cranial nerves III, IV and VI and describe how the nerve fibers of the corresponding nerves exit from the brainstem and travel to reach the orbit.

----- 2) Describe the role played by these nerves in bringing about movement of the eyes.

----- 3) Be able to explain how you would test each of these cranial nerves, and the deficit you would expect if one of them were damaged.

----- 4) Describe the functions carried out by the parasympathetic fibers carried in III.

----- 5) Be able to explain how a unilateral lesion of the medial longitudinal fasciculus, just rostral to the abducens nucleus, causes the condition termed internuclear ophthalmoplegia. This is lesion 4 in Blumenfeld's Figure 13.13, discussed on Page 550.

----- 6) Be able to explain how you would test the hypoglossal nerve and the deficit you would expect if it were damaged. Also, how to distinguish between damage to nerve and damage to the descending corticobulbar input to the hypoglossal nucleus.
