PIXELATED CARDS
- - - The fact of the matter is that the precise details of the auditory and vestibular pathways within the brainstem are of very limited importance, from a practical, clinical point of view. In the case of the auditory system, that's because the pathway, once it leaves the cochlear nuclei, ascends on both the ipsilateral and contralateral sides of the brain. Unilateral lesions do not give rise to obvious hearing loss. In the case of the vestibular system, symptoms are usually due to problems within the semicircular canals, damage to the nerve as it enters the brainstem or damage to the so-called "vestibulo-cerebellum".
- - - Therefore as you trace the auditory and vestibular pathways you should realize that this represents your last trip through the brainstem. Think of it as an opportunity to review and integrate all the anatomy you have learned so far. Make use of the "Go to" feature (the column of pathways or systems at the left of each atlas view) when you call up slides if you want to take a look at material we have covered in the past.
