Module 13

- - - - -Designing a laboratory exercise on the Limbic System has always been incredibly difficult. It would not be so hard to show you the major components of the system, listed in Blumenfeld's Table 18.1, but the list of pathways connecting these structures (Table 18.4) is almost endless. Identifying the pathways might be worth the effort if we could tell the function served by each - but we can't. So we are going to settle for expecting you to accomplish the five modest goals listed in the objectives section of the module. This means just "doing the module". That's going to involve a lot of going back and forth through the slides so, at times, you may find it best to use the "one slide rostral/caudal" button rather than calling up the slides one at a time.

- - - - - Two years ago we tried creating two "trips" to guide you through the slides. It is not clear whether or not they are really helpful. Try them if you like, or just do the module.

TRIP 1 - FROM THE OLFACTORY BULB TO THE AMYGDALA IN 6 EASY CLICKS (plus a few optional ones). Like all tours, you may want to do a little background reading before you start. Here are some suggestions.

Of course, like most travelers, you may opt to skip the background reading. Still, you really should have some maps, to keep track of where you are . We urge you to open Figure 13-1 and Figure 13-2 and keep them handy during the trip. To get going, click on start.

TRIP 2 - THE HIPPOCAMPUS AND THE PAPEZ CIRCUIT. The hippocampus is a temporal lobe neighbor of the amygdala, but the two carry out quite different functions. The amygdala is concerned with regulating emotions (and other things) while the hippocampus is primarily occupied with the laying down of new memories. A good introductory figure for this trip is Old Fig. 17.
