LIMBIC SYSTEM - THE OLFACTORY TRACT |

x- PIXBRAIN HOME _ _ MOD 13 HOME _ _ I WANT TO -x TRIP 1#1 - At this level, the olfactory tract is still a compact bundle of darkly staining fibers, but it has just fused with the orbital surface of the frontal lobe. Keep in mind that this is the olfactory TRACT, not the olfactory nerve. These are the axons of "second order neurons" (mitral and tufted cells) that are found in the olfactory bulb. You should realize that there are also some "centrifugal" fibers in the tract that have originated in the contralateral anterior olfactory nucleus. We never see this nucleus |

on our slides. The whole issue of the role played by centrigugal fibers of this sort is a mystery but they are present in both the somatic sensory system and the auditory system. NEXT |
