MODULE 11 - INTRODUCTION By this point in the course, having studied the ascending sensory systems, the descending motor systems, the cerebellum, the basal ganglia and the cranial nerves, you probably know most of the underlying concepts of brain structure and function that will form a conceptual framework for the visual system. Not only should your background in neuroanatomy thus far make it easy to comprehend the organizational details of this system, but you will probably find that studying this sensory pathway will help you to reconsider and review what you have already learned about other systems. Since the visual system is undoubtedly the best understood sensory pathway in terms of anatomy, physiology, and their correspondence to clinical problems, it will be rewarding for you to learn an area of neurobiology for which the fine details of the anatomical organization and the physiological properties of cells are so intimately related.
