ANTERIOR to the OPTIC CHIASM
The optic nerve passes from the orbit to the cranial cavity by running through the optic canal. To remind yourself of the anatomy of this region, consult a skull and look at the following views:

The intracranial course of the optic nerves is quite brief. Obviously, they lie in the space between the basilar surface of the frontal lobe and the dorsal surface of the sphenoid bone, as seen in Cu Slide 40.
