TRIP 2 #6 - Keep your eye on the stria terminalis and the fornix and compare their course with that shown in FIGURE 13-1 . We are now at the level of plane E and guess what! The fornix is again cut twice!

_____ Our plan is to continue rostrally, to observe the fornix as it descends, just in front of the Interventricular Foramen of Monro, and then turns caudally to reach the mammillary body. In the process, we will follow the stria terminalis to its final destination.

TRIP 2 #13 - The mammillothalamic tract has entered the Anterior Nucleus on the left and is almost there on the right. Remember that our aim, on trip 2, has been to trace out the Papez circuit. The diagram in Lect. fig 11 reminds us that the next link is a projection via the "thalamic radiation" = internal capsule to reach the cingulate gyrus. You can imagine this pathway by just drawing a line from the Anterior nucleus into the internal capsule, around the caudate nucleus, and then medially to reach the cingulate gyrus - all at the level of this slide. Neurons in the cingulate gyrus contribute axons to afiber bundle within the gyrus - the cingulum - and this bundle runs longitudinally, back to the temporal lobe, as shown in Lect. fig 21, thus completing the circuit.
