CASE 11

     1) Virtually total paralysis of body movement.
     2) Subject appears comatose, but EEG reveals alert pattern.
     3) Careful examination reveals conjugate eye movements are present. When a code is established (“look to the left if the answer is yes”) the subject can respond to questions in an intelligent manner.
